Why Arts Novis NYC?

IMG_2898.jpg

Arts Novis NYC is the creation of Mike Jukoski (you will be able to meet him below) and is derived from the Latin word for new- novi.  It literally means "New Art".  This idea of newness also brings to mind the Buddhist concept of "Beginners Mind". It is the idea that a beginner can approach a subject with a sense of openess without preconceived concepts in ways that an expert can not.  It is hoped that when viewing the images  contained in the galleries you will view them with your beginners mind allowing for an unfolding of possibilities.

The Inspiration

Mike was inspired to create Arts Novis NYC after visiting a friend who was staying in a large chain hotel.  Mike was taken aback by the dull, unimaginative artwork in the room.   Mike knew his photographs were much better than the uninspiring artwork he viewed in that hotel room and wanted to get his photography out in the world.

     What's Next?

Meet Mike Jukoski

Mike is a social worker and visual artist who has lived and worked in New York City since 1994

Mike started using photography as a means of expression after taking a black and white photography class in high school during the early 1980s.  He has always been fascinated by the fact that what is left out of a photograph can be just as important as what is contained within the image.  Recently he has focused on using digital photography as a medium for capturing the world by focusing on small parts or details of mundane objects or street scenes.  In this way the mundane takes on an exotic quality when it is removed from the context in which it exists.

Mike spent his formative years on the East Coast of the U.S. and in Hawaii.  He then moved to Los Angeles and spent 10 years living in Southern California  before relocating to New York City.

Mike feels that living in a place like New York City surrounded by smart and creative people has inspired him to take his art to new levels.

About The Work

What do I see?      What is that?

These are the questions Mike invites the viewers of his work to ask themselves.  In trying to answer these questions different viewers may come up with radically different answers.  No answer is right and no answer is wrong.  Through the process of answering these questions I hope to inspire the viewer to turn inward, as they examine their reactions to the work.  By doing so the work transforms from an artwork into a type of mirror, which reflects aspects and elements of the viewer’s own psyche back to them.

Mike's work is influenced by the Fantastic Art Movement of the 20th century, especially Abstract Expressionism.  This art movement has its beginnings in 1950's New York and was, from the beginning about embracing emotion and energy and expressing both through art and the artistic process.

All the photographs contained in the galleries were taken with an iphone 5, X or 11.  For the subject matter Mike chose to focus on common everyday objects, street scenes or magnified sections of objects.  Interesting geometric or repeated patterns always catch his eye.  Mike is always curious how these patterns will look after a filter is added to it.  He is a fan of bright saturated colors as the use of color also serves to remove the context in which the object existed from the viewer.  Without clues to what they are seeing the viewer is left to project their own interpretation on to the images
